For more than 30 years, the Sunrise Optimist Club has proudly recognized outstanding students from schools across the Lincoln area through our Student of the Week program. This tradition honors young people who demonstrate leadership, character, academic achievement, and a positive impact on their school and community.
By celebrating these students, we aim to encourage excellence, recognize hard work, and highlight the bright future being built right here in Lincoln, one student at a time.
2025-2026
School Year Honorees
Andrew McGahan, son of Chris and Julie McGahan, is a student at St. Patrick School.
Why This Student Was Nominated: School officials said: “Andrew is thoughtful and has a helpful heart. He is great at noticing needs in the classroom and around the school. He acts to take care of those needs and tries to help others see them as well. Andrew is a good participant in class, often engaging in class discussion. He wants to do well in his classes. Andrew has diverse interests and enjoys sharing them with those around him. He cares about his classmates and is a good friend to those around him.
Awards and Recognition: Many ROCK awards at St. Patrick School; completed Hunter Education and Bow Hunter Education..
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Volunteer at Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach.
Athletic Accomplishments: Played select basketball, Elks football, and Jr. Saltdogs + YMCA baseball; named Most Improved Player on Elks football team.
Religious Activities: Altar server for school and Sunday Masses, member of FCSLA and helps host doughnut socials monthly after Mass.
Outside Achievements: First Class rank Boy Scout in Troop 159; plays saxophone in school band and participated in Pius X junior high honor band.
Hobbies and Other Interests: Enjoys camping, basketball, baseball, and football. He can often be found shooting hoops, riding his scooter, or playing video games.
Susie Serrato, daughter of Kerri and Enrique Serrato, is a 6th–grade student at Scott Middle School.
Why was this student nominated? Susie was nominated for her kindness to others and because she is a hard worker and an engaged learner.

Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Aria is a member of the Hope Squad, which is a peer-to-peer support system to help prevent suicide.
Outside achievements: Aria participates in several STEM-related activities, such as Girls Code Lincoln (computer programming club) and the Inclusivity and Engineering clubs.
Hobbies and outside interests: Aria plays clarinet in the band, and also participates in the school choir. In her free time, she likes to read and crochet.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said:
- “Drew is happy and upbeat. He always tries his best and keeps a positive attitude. He is a good friend, and student.”
- “Drew is always willing to help others, when asked or on his own accord when he notices a classmate is struggling. He is one of the kindest students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. He gives his best effort on all assignments.”

- Drew is a part of our Unified Book and Game Club.

- Drew loves watching and talking about Husker sports including volleyball, football, and basketball. He also enjoys playing basketball.
- Other comments:
- Drew was gone for a couple of months due to a surgery. He recently returned and has jumped right back into learning. His positivity and calmness was missed while he was gone.
Aydin Krogh, son of Paige Soulliere and Aaron Krogh, is a 7th-grade student at Dawes Middle School.
Awards and recognition: Nebraska Wesleyan University Recognition in 2025 for Citizenship & Leadership; 2026 for We Learn and We Care.; 7th Grade Team Recognition;
Countless Diamondback recognitions.
Why was this student nominated?: School officials said, “What truly sets Aydin apart is his maturity. He has a unique ability to anticipate the needs of both teachers and peers. Whether it’s passing out materials or offering support to a struggling classmate before being asked, Aydin is always two steps ahead in being helpful and respectful. Aydin is a ‘first friend’ to a new student or someone sitting alone. His work in Unified Music highlights his desire for inclusive, positive connections. Aydin doesn’t just participate in classes; he ensures that every peer, regardless of ability, feels heard and valued. Aydin’s kindness isn’t passive—it’s an active choice he makes every day. In the Engineering Club, Aydin constantly looks toward future goals and accomplishments, approaching problems with a blend of logic and creativity.”

Andrielys Sanchez Lossada, daughter of Jenglis Lossada Carusi, is a 7th-grade student at Culler Middle School.

Jackson is a positive role model for his peers. He prioritizes his academics and is kind to all. Jackson is a very respectful student. He excels academically and works well with all peers. He is kind, hardworking, and very responsible.
Civic and volunteer involvement: HOPE Squad.
Awards and recognition: Hardworking Rockstar Award – 7th grade. (6th-grade team award last year.)
Hobbies and outside interests: plays soccer all year around and travels. Enjoys hanging out with friends, video games, and golf.

Adelina Hershberger, daughter of Abigail and Sean Hershberger, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.
Why was this student nominated? “Adelina is a hardworking and dedicated student who consistently gives her best effort in both her schoolwork and extracurricular activities. She is a creative student who brings imagination and care to her projects and often expresses that creativity through thoughtful gifts for her teachers and friends. She is respectful and pleasant to her teachers and kind to her peers.”
Civic and Volunteer involvement: Babysitting. Made blankets for the homeless.
Athletic Accomplishments: Golf and swimming.
Religious Activities: Sings in the choir at her church – often chosen for solos. Participates in Catholic summer camp.
Hobbies and outside interests: Dance. Voice Lessons. Crocheting – she crocheted four large blankets in one year. Reading. Junior High Literature. Speech Team.
Manny Radtke, son of Bill and Nicole Radtke, is a seventh-grade student at Pound Middle School.
Teacher’s comment: “Manny is a role model student. He is engaged in the lessons and is helpful to anyone around him. I appreciate Manny’s participation in our class discussions. He always comes to the classroom with a positive attitude and readiness to learn.”
Awards and recognition: Earned three Calvert Elementary Effort Awards.
Civic and volunteer involvement: Manny volunteers with his theatre group in the community called Lincoln Children’s Theatre. He assists in choreography, lighting, back stage assisting, and casting. He is currently volunteering for two musicals this winter.
Hobbies and outside Interests: Manny enjoys hanging out with his friends, reading, and being creative through many art forms. He loves drawing, painting and pottery. Manny participates in multiple musicals each year with Youth Actors Academy of Lincoln (YAAL) and Lincoln Children’s Theatre (LCT). He has been cast as Scar in “Lion King”; Wicked Witch in “The Wizard of Oz”; Ursula in ” Little Mermaid”; the Duchess in “Alice by Heart”; Squidward in “Spongebob the Musical”; Damian in “Mean Girls Jr.,” and many supporting character roles in other musicals such as “Aladdin”; “Mary Poppins”; “Jungle Book”; “Addams Family,” and “Shrek the Musical.”
Other comments: Teachers add, “Manny is fun, sarcastic, creative, and responsible. He loves dancing, singing, road trips, laughing with others, and friendly competition. Whether he’s being social or enjoying time at home, Manny brings positivity and humor to those around him.”
Irene James, daughter of Deepa Jose and James Kathilankal, is an 8th-grade student at Mickle Middle School.

Academic Excellence: Always goes above and beyond when completing work; responsible, motivated, and puts in extra effort.
Leadership and Character: A self-advocate with confidence in her skill set; shows a willingness to lead and act as a role model.

Taytum Gusso, daughter of Dominic and Shannon Gusso, is a 7th -grade student at Scott Middle School.
Why was this student nominated?
School officials said, “Taytum is an amazing student and human being who consistently demonstrates a positive attitude and great academic effort in class every day. She is a hard worker who is consistently kind, respectful, and responsible, and she is known for being helpful and friendly to others, often assisting those in need. Taytum is bubbly and excited,
always wearing a smile and possesses a great sense of humor that can bring a smile to anyone face. She is always willing to participate, works well with everyone, and is a peer whom others look up to, both inside and outside of school.”

Member of Scott “A Team” for both volleyball and basketball. Top Team member for Supreme Basketball and Team Fury Softball.

Athletic accomplishments: Elsa participated on the cross-country team at Culler this fall and was an All-City selection in the high jump as a 7th-grader.
Outside achievements: Elsa was selected as an alternate for All-State Band.
Hobbies and outside interests: Elsa is a well-rounded individual, enjoying a wide range of hobbies including reading, music and drawing.
Other comments: School officials added, “Culler has been so fortunate to have Elsa as a member of our community. She starts every period by welcoming her teachers and classmates. She brings a smile to our building every day. Elsa is a team leader and is also willing to let others take the spotlight.”
Evie Stukenholtz, daughter of Cole and Katey Stukenholtz, is an 8th-grade student at Pound Middle School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Pound staff nominated Evie because she is an outstanding example of what Pound students should strive to be. Her work ethic in the classroom, school involvement, leadership, and kindness to others is extremely valuable to our school community.”
Civic and volunteer involvement: Volunteers time for neighborhood dog-walking.
Athletic accomplishments: Has been a dancer for 10 years.
Outside achievements: Has been selected for the Lincoln City Girls Choir and the invite-only All-City Choir. Starred in the Lincoln Community Playhouse summer musical as Nemo.
Hobbies and outside interests: Crocheting, crafting, singing, dancing, acting, animal lover.
Awards: Two-time winner of the Nicest Teammate Award on her Company Dance Team.
Maddie Bissell, daughter of Jen and Jeremy Bissell, is a 7th -grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Maddie is a thoughtful, organized
student who is prepared for class and works hard to maintain her grades. Maddie is an
independent learner and is focused until the task is complete. Maddie is kind and polite to
classmates and staff. Maddie isn’t afraid to ask questions and work through challenges.”
They added, “She is driven and confident. She is a positive role model to her classmates.
Maddie’s willingness to help others and her kind heart make her a valuable friend. She is
respectful and polite. Maddie takes pride in the work she does. She comes to school with a
smile and a willingness to learn.
“Maddie is a thoughtful, organized student; she is prepared for class and works hard to
maintain her grades. She is driven and confident. She is a positive role model to her classmates. Maddie’s willingness to help others and kind heart make her a valuable friend. She is respectful and polite. Maddie handles herself with grace and poise in challenging situations.”
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: She helps her mom volunteering with veterans.
Athletic accomplishments: She enjoys playing volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
Religious activities: Maddie attends daily Mass and often reads her Bible at home.
Outside interests: Maddie loves arts and crafts, reading, and watching movies.
Yakub Kamoona, son of Chrystal Dunworth and Haidar Kazem, is a 6th-grade student at Mickle Middle School.
Why this student was nominated: Teachers had the following to say about Yakub:
“Yakub is a great role model and friend to others. He takes learning seriously and is respectful of others. He enjoys hunting and being with his friends.”
Community involvement and volunteer involvement: Volunteered for Friendship Home’s Safe Quarters event . Participated in No Kings Protest and Free Palestine protests.
Athletic involvement: Participates in the Mayor’s Run and Pumpkin Run annually.
André Bucknor, son of Andrew M.L. Bucknor and Patricia Bucknor, is a 7 th -grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “André is conscientious about his school work; he is determined to discover the answers even when clarification is needed. He is polite and respectful to everyone, a hardworking student who always puts his best foot forward on any task in front of him. Andre knows when he needs help and asks for it.” They added, “André is a hard worker and curious. He’s confident and determined. He is also kind to himself and others. He tackles challenges with a smile. He lights up a classroom with his positive energy and is a role model to his classmates. He is a trustworthy friend.”
Awards and recognition: André has been recognized for his athletic improvements.
Civic and volunteer involvement: He volunteers with the Knights of Columbus during the Fish Fries by refilling drinks.
Athletic accomplishments: André continues to grow, develop, and master new skills in several sports. He continues to improve his speed and stamina due to extra practice.
Religious activities: André attends daily school Mass and loves attending Mass on Sunday.
Hobbies and outside interests: He enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing video games, and playing football.
Hobbies and outside interests: Sophia goes above and beyond on all assignments, and strives to treat all students as part of the Culler community. We are lucky to have Sophia in our building. She starts every period by welcoming her peers and adults. She brings a smile to our building each and every day.
Hobbies and interests: “I also babysit for various clients, play the piano, play the organ at Mass, am involved in lots of sports and Page One, and I love going to adoration and pray whenever I have time,” she said.
Other comments: “I was also involved in Student Council last year, applied this year, am a head lector for Mass, have always accomplished service hours, have a clean record, and am a straight-A student.”
Athletic accomplishments: Helped his soccer team win state and go to regionals and nationals.
Religious activities: Plays guitar and serves at Mass.
Hobbies: Enjoys playing soccer, guitar, and video games.
Other comments: Hudson helps his younger sister with her homework every night.
Isabella Nguyen, daughter of Vivian Ho and Joseph Nguyen, is an 8th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Bella is a delightful, kind and self-motivated student. She is involved in many school groups and teams and has a lot of natural leadership roles and qualities. She has good relationships with her classmates and school staff. She’s a great example of a virtuous leader in our school.”
Awards and recognition: Silver and Burgundy Honor Roll. Awesome Attitude Award (STUCO) Leadership Training Stripes and Ribbons for achievements in TNTT.

Brielle Geiger, daughter of Eric and Kira Geiger, is an 8th-grade student at Parkview Christian School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Brielle is a fantastic representation of our school community, pursuing excellence in academics, art, band, and activities. She is a positive influence and shares humor and kindness with her peers in a way that elevates our school culture and community. We take great pride in having her represent the Patriots in the Lincoln community.”
Chet Willnerd, son of Matt and Erin Willnerd, is an 8th -grade student at St. Peter’s Catholic School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials cited his kindness to others, Christian
fellowship, and strong work ethic.
Awards and recognition: Honor Roll multiple semesters; Boy Scouts Arrow of Light; Knights of Columbus free throw champion at St. Peter’s.
Civic and volunteer involvement: cleans church monthly; helped with set-up and clean-up for Fall Festival.

Bekah (Rebekah) Wilke, daughter of Kelli Wilke and Shawn Wilke, is an 8 th -grade student at St. Peter’s Catholic School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said Bekah has a great attitude, and was
cited for academic excellence and Christian fellowship.
Awards and recognition: Honor Roll; 1 st place in her Science Fair category; Student Council

Civic and volunteer involvement: Sells seatbacks at Husker football games for her church;
serves at fish fries; helps raise money for the ASAP program; picks up litter off the streets.
Athletic accomplishments: participates in school volleyball, basketball and archery programs; club volleyball player; played on YMCA championship softball team; YMCA Spirit Basketball League player.

Tyler Beran, son of Mike & Kathy Beran, is an 8th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why this student was nominated:
School officials said: “Tyler is a calm and inquisitive student. He forms strong friendships with his peers and isn’t afraid to lend them a hand when they need one. He is driven and well-rounded. Tyler searches for the truth and the reason why things work. He is determined, humble, positive and kind.”
Molly Witkowicz, daughter of Erica and Noah Witkowicz, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph Catholic School.

Jackson volunteers with his family at People’s City Mission.
Jackson participates in flag football, soccer, cross-country, basketball, and runs track. He also does American Ninja Warrior and qualified for the World’s Championship last year.
Jackson volunteers to help plan and carry out activities for his youth group at church.
Jackson loves all things sports-related. He also loves playing board games and video games. He works at Nebraska Ninja as a Junior Ninja coach.
Hobbies/Activities: She also enjoys engaging in activities such as reading, swimming, pickleball, badminton, and volleyball. She and her siblings have three guinea pigs named Stitch, Grayson, and Fifi.
Layna DeBuhr, daughter of Jessica DeBuhr and Howard Brown, Madeline Hendrix-Jones and John Hendrix-Jones, is a 7th-grade student at Dawes Middle School.

Layna’s involvement in school and outside-of-school activities is phenomenal, and she balances her schedule easily.”

Ryan Huber, son of Matt and Leah Huber, is an 8th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Ryan is friendly, polite, and respectful; is kind to others, involved in school activities, and has a strong academic performance.”
Awards and recognition: in 7th grade, he placed first in Science Fair in Physical Science; has attained Silver Honor Roll every quarter since sixth grade.
Athletic accomplishments: finished second in discus and third in shot put at Catholic School Track Meet; plays basketball and golf.
Religious activities: altar server; was named Server of the Month in January 2024.
Hobbies and outside interests: CAD Design and 3-D printing; Frisbee golf; archery, and bowling.

School officials said: “Seham was nominated by the teachers at Dawes because she stands out in many ways. She will email teachers to get what she needs. She submits high quality work. She is a role model when working with a partner in class. She is polite and goes above and beyond by doing extra work in class. She really values her education, and it shows.”

School officials said: “Seham makes a difference in her community, at home and at school. At Dawes, she is a good friend and considerate of all peers. She is a positive asset to the culture at Dawes. At home, she helps her family by cleaning the house.”
Athletic accomplishments
Seham participates in sports outside of school. She is part of a basketball club and a volleyball club.
Hobbies and outside interests
Seham loves to draw. She especially enjoys drawing people. She listens to music, like Frank Ocean. She likes cats and has a cat named Brownie.
Lola Bunz, daughter of Brent and Tamara Bunz, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.

School officials said: “Lola gives her best effort on every assignment. Her dedication is evident especially in her excellent writing. She is a role model in the respect she shows to adults and peers.”

said: “Jahlyssa is always kind and respectful. She has a high level of
integrity, making her trustworthy while always following Dawes CARE
expectations. Jahlyssa is a role model for peers and always offers to help
peers and teachers. She looks for more opportunities to learn and is
academically motivated. Jahlyssa is driven for success and advocates for her
plans for her future achievements.”

Awards and Recognition: Zachary has received the Super Server Award and the Christian Courtesy Award. He has been on the JETS Honor Roll and the Principal’s Honor Roll.
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Zachary has been a Builders Club class representative for two years. He has been in the Youth Choir for three years and Honor Choir for one year. He has participated in the school musical and has helped with the Husker chair backs project.
Athletic Accomplishments: Zachary participates with the Saint John’s Archery Team. He’s played for the Allo football team, wrestles with the Pius Wrestling Club, and he’s placed in the top 6 in the javelin, shot put, and discus events with the Lincoln Youth Track Club.

Thatcher Plugge, son of Amanda and Brian Plugge, is an 8th-grade student at Pound Middle School.
Why was the student nominated?: Thatcher is an excellent scholar and is kind to his peers. He works very hard to please adults and fellow students. He is always respectful, very humble, and is a joy to have in class.
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Thatcher is on the Pound Student Council, serving as vice president. He enjoys a good leadership opportunity. Every Thursday he wears a Hawaiian shirt, to match his laid-back attitude and celebration that the weekend is almost here.
Athletic Accomplishments: Thatcher really enjoys playing tennis, just for FUN! He has recently picked up pickleball with his brother.
Outside Achievements: Thatcher plays the double-string bass. He has been a member of YES and JYO, select orchestras in Lincoln. He also plays in the Pound Select Jazz Band, earning top scores and placing in state competitions.
Hobbies and Outside Interests: Thatcher enjoys spending his free time with family and friends. He enjoys online video games with friends in other states. Dungeons and Dragons is a favorite, spending hours eating and socializing with his friends. Since early childhood, Thatcher has enjoyed LEGOS. He still enjoys building and creating; he has now started to enjoy the art of sorting and organizing his Lego collection.

Travion Johnson, son of Victoria and Drew Edmond, is a 7th-grade at Pound Middle School.
Why was this student nominated? Travion is a kind and considerate student. Each day, he demonstrates kindness in his interactions with peers, no matter their social standing. Trey is always willing to lend a helping hand to his classmates and teachers. He completes high-quality work and seeks information/opportunities to learn new things.
Awards and Recognition – Trey has maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher throughout his middle school years and regularly puts in extra effort to ensure that his grades reflect his hard work and dedication to school. His teachers recognize him frequently for being a standout student. He is also a member of a school group that focuses on new ideas to implement at Pound.
Civic and Volunteer involvement – This past January, Trey was selected to participate in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Rally. He fulfilled the role of reading a write-up about the historic song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” which was sung during the Civil Rights Era in the 1950’s.
Athletic accomplishments – Trey enjoys playing football and basketball, and currently plays AAU basketball through Supreme. He plays flag football through the YMCA, and will soon be starting a spring season of 7v7 football through Lincoln Youth Football. Each day before his practices and/or games, Trey commits himself to a home workout to focus on enhancing his skills in each of these sports. He has developed so much throughout the years, and was a phenomenal leader on the teams he was a part of In 6th grade. He won a knockout contest at Pound and was then selected to participate in a championship knockout contest at a Lincoln Southeast basketball game, competing with other middle schoolers throughout Lincoln..
Hobbies and outside interests – Trey enjoys playing family sports games, drawing, video games, spending time with his younger brothers, and making his household laugh.
Other comments – Trey is such a wonderful role model for those around him. He has always stood up for what’s right and encourages others around him to be themselves. His sense of humor and positive attitude keep everyone moving forward and enjoying the ups and downs of life. We are so proud of the young man he’s growing into !

Carter Aksamit, son of Crystal Aksamit, is a 7th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why was this student nominated? Carter is a mature, responsible student, often showing kindness towards other students. He is a confident learner and asks questions to better understand information. He is cheerful and helpful in the classroom, and he is a valued friend. Carter shows a love of learning outside the classroom.
Awards & Recognition: Carter has been on the JETS Honor Roll, received the Saint John Berchmanns’ Award, and is a past Jetsetter Award winner.

is interested in aerospace engineering and aviation. Carter has attended several
airshows in Lincoln, the Sound of Speed Airshow in St. Joseph, Mo., and an airshow
at Miramar Airforce Base in San Diego, Calif.


Atley Janecek, daughter of Joel and Torri Janecek, is an 8th-grade student at Lincoln Lutheran Middle/High School.
Awards: High Honor roll each semester at Lincoln Lutheran.
Why was the student nominated? She is an extremely hard worker, a great classmate, and a genuinely good kid. She never shies away from a challenge and is always willing to work with any of her classmates. She uses her time productively and always sets a good example for others.
