For more than 30 years, the Sunrise Optimist Club has proudly recognized outstanding students from schools across the Lincoln area through our Student of the Week program. This tradition honors young people who demonstrate leadership, character, academic achievement, and a positive impact on their school and community.

By celebrating these students, we aim to encourage excellence, recognize hard work, and highlight the bright future being built right here in Lincoln, one student at a time.

School Year Honorees

Andrew McGahan, son of Chris and Julie McGahan, is a student at St. Patrick School.

Why This Student Was Nominated: School officials said: “Andrew is thoughtful and has a helpful heart. He is great at noticing needs in the classroom and around the school. He acts to take care of those needs and tries to help others see them as well. Andrew is a good participant in class, often engaging in class discussion. He wants to do well in his classes. Andrew has diverse interests and enjoys sharing them with those around him. He cares about his classmates and is a good friend to those around him.

Awards and Recognition: Many ROCK awards at St. Patrick School; completed Hunter Education and Bow Hunter Education..

Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Volunteer at Matt Talbot Kitchen and Outreach.

Athletic Accomplishments: Played select basketball, Elks football, and Jr. Saltdogs + YMCA baseball; named Most Improved Player on Elks football team.

Religious Activities: Altar server for school and Sunday Masses, member of FCSLA and helps host doughnut socials monthly after Mass.

Outside Achievements: First Class rank Boy Scout in Troop 159; plays saxophone in school band and participated in Pius X junior high honor band.

Hobbies and Other Interests: Enjoys camping, basketball, baseball, and football. He can often be found shooting hoops, riding his scooter, or playing video games.

Susie Serrato, daughter of Kerri and Enrique Serrato, is a 6th–grade student at Scott Middle School.

Why was this student nominated? Susie was nominated for her kindness to others and because she is a hard worker and an engaged learner.

Student’s awards and recognition:  6B team awards for being Optimistic and Responsible.

Athletic accomplishments:  Gymnast at Pioneer Gymnastics, Basketball at YMCA

Hobbies and outside interests: Wildlife and Campus Life clubs, gymnastics, volleyball, basketball

Sampson Drahota, son of Jack Drahota and Trish Drahota, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.
 
Why was this student nominated? School officials said: “Sampson Drahota brings an energy that is both contagious and uplifting, and his good-natured personality makes him a joy to be around. He treats others with kindness and respect, never seeking to hurt feelings. His quick thinking often shines in class discussions, and his enthusiasm adds life to our learning community.”
They added: “He continues to grow as a student. We are grateful for the humor, warmth, and personality he brings to our school each day.”
 
Activities, athletics: He is a member of the Honor Choir and the Lincoln Youth Football All-Star team. He participates in weight-lifting, basketball, football and wrestling.
Ryan Donohue, son of Ryan and Andrea Donohue, is an 8th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
 
Why was this student nominated? School officials said “Ryan excels  in creativity, wit, and his academic efforts. He is actively involved in multiple school activities. He is always friendly, funny, and willing to help, and maintains positive relationships with classmates and faculty.
 
Awards and recognition: Honor roll student. Won last year’s pro-life essay contest in our diocese.
 
Civic and volunteer involvement: has experience with Food Net here in Lincoln and on Student Council.
 
Athletic achievements: currently plays basketball and has past experience in several other sports, including baseball.
Religious activities: Server at school and Sunday Masses.
Hobbies and outside interests: Enjoys video games.
 
Other comments: “Ryan is a joy to be around and always willing to help with his younger siblings.”
 
Aria Dyer, daughter of Robert Dyer and Allie Dyer, is a 6th-grade student at Mickle Middle School.
 

Why was this student was nominated? Here’s what teachers had to say about Aria: “Aria is a great role model and friend to others.  She is a leader and always does her work in class. “

“Aria is a hard worker and never gives up.  She is a positive leader in class and always has a good attitude.”

“Aria does a great job in PE class and always participates.  She has a positive attitude and is a positive leader for her classmates.”

“Aria is an excellent addition to our after-school science, inclusion, and film clubs. She is fun, very passionate about things, and a good friend.”

“Aria can always be counted on to be following class expectations.  She is a hard worker, participates in class and is willing to take on a challenge.  She is also very helpful and respectful to adults and peers.”


Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Aria is a member of the Hope Squad, which is a peer-to-peer support system to help prevent suicide.

Outside achievements: Aria participates in several STEM-related activities, such as Girls Code Lincoln (computer programming club) and the Inclusivity and Engineering clubs.

Hobbies and outside interests: Aria plays clarinet in the band, and also participates in the school choir. In her free time, she likes to read and crochet.

Drew Gosch, son of Shauna and Charles Gosch, is an 8th-grade student at Culler Middle School.

Why was this student nominated? School officials said:

  • “Drew is happy and upbeat. He always tries his best and keeps a positive attitude. He is a good friend, and student.”
  • “Drew is always willing to help others, when asked or on his own accord when he notices a classmate is struggling. He is one of the kindest students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. He gives his best effort on all assignments.”

  • Drew is a part of our Unified Book and Game Club.
  • Hobbies and outside interests:
  • Drew loves watching and talking about Husker sports including volleyball, football, and basketball.  He also enjoys playing basketball.
  • Other comments:
  • Drew was gone for a couple of months due to a surgery. He recently returned and has jumped right back into learning. His positivity and calmness was missed while he was gone.

Aydin Krogh, son of Paige Soulliere and Aaron Krogh, is a 7th-grade student at Dawes Middle School.

Awards and recognition: Nebraska Wesleyan University Recognition in 2025 for Citizenship & Leadership; 2026 for We Learn and We Care.; 7th Grade Team Recognition;

Countless Diamondback recognitions.

Why was this student nominated?: School officials said, “What truly sets Aydin apart is his maturity. He has a unique ability to anticipate the needs of both teachers and peers. Whether it’s passing out materials or offering support to a struggling classmate before being asked, Aydin is always two steps ahead in being helpful and respectful. Aydin is a ‘first friend’ to a new student or someone sitting alone. His work in Unified Music highlights his desire for inclusive, positive connections. Aydin doesn’t just participate in classes; he ensures that every peer, regardless of ability, feels heard and valued. Aydin’s kindness isn’t passive—it’s an active choice he makes every day. In the Engineering Club, Aydin constantly looks toward future goals and accomplishments, approaching problems with a blend of logic and creativity.”

Regan Crozier, daughter of Travis & Tiffany Crozier, is an 8th-grade student at Parkview Christian School.
 
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Regan is a fantastic student who has earned a regular place on our high honor roll and also devotes herself to school activities ranging from the arts to athletics. Regan was also elected as a middle school representative to our student council and participated in the University of Nebraska Code Crush – a program designed to encourage females to learn more about computer science. We are so proud to have her as part of our student body and community!”
Jaelyn Auten, daughter of Michella and Doug Auten, is a 7th-grade student at Scott Middle School.
Why was this student nominated?
School officials said, “Jaelyn is an exemplary student who consistently strives to do her best under all circumstances. She is a reliable and trustworthy friend to everyone, demonstrating a quiet, calm leadership in class. 
Jaelyn is known for being incredibly kind and respectful, and she works hard in all her endeavors. She possesses a maturity beyond most 7th-graders, showing an understanding of humor while maintaining her role as both a great peer and an outstanding student.”

Civic and volunteer involvement:
Active in church, Feed the Hunger, and teaches dance to 2-to-4-year-olds.
Athletic accomplishments:

Dance, cooking, youth group and church ministry trips.
Other comments:
School officials added, “Jaelyn is very involved in church activities.  She follows her faith, volunteers to help teach the little kids how important life is and to make good choices.  Her mission trips are very important to her as a means to keep connected with friends and faith. Jaelyn also enjoys dancing.  She does Ballet, Jazz, Pointe and Company.  She has been dancing for eight years.  She loves teaching little kids.”
Emiya Napue, daughter of Nicole Napue, is a 6th-grade student at Culler Middle School.
 
Imagine walking down the halls of the school and being greeted by a big smile and the biggest hug. Well, that is Emiya Napue. She is a remarkable young lady whose zest for life makes her a natural nominee for Student of the Week. She is a member of the Clyde Malone Panthers Cheer Team, which represents the essence of community pride, spirit, and enthusiasm. Emiya is also a member of the girls’ basketball program at the Malone Center, which not only shows her athletic prowess but her commitment to the concept of teamwork and good sportsmanship.
 
Emiya is a star student as well. She is a New Student Ambassador, which is a critical student leadership role at Culler Middle School that plays a huge part in welcoming new students to our school at any given time of the year. It is a big responsibility for a 6th-grade student, but Emiya was not afraid to take on the challenge. She is meticulous when giving her tours to the new students. She takes the time that is needed to show them around the school, making them feel comfortable and welcome to our school community. She is a kind soul who has made a huge impact on many of the new students.
 
Academically, Emiya is a diligent and devoted student. She always works hard for her teachers. This effort and dedication makes her a role model for her peers within the classroom due to her determination and positive attitude towards her studies.
In Emiya’s spare time, she likes to color and paint her nails. Working on her nail art, she likes to share these creative activities with her friends and family. This is a good representation of Emiya’s well-rounded personality and ability to stay connected with herself, her interests and hobbies, as well as her supportive community of friends and family.
Emiya enriches our school community through her involvement, kindness, and tireless optimism. She truly exemplifies what it means to be a Culler Cougar, and she lives these values each and every day.

Andrielys Sanchez Lossada, daughter of Jenglis Lossada Carusi, is a 7th-grade student at Culler Middle School.

Why was this student nominated:

School officials said: “The ideal Culler Cougar is Andrielys. Courageously she tries new things, like Orchestra. She builds our school community by mastering multiple languages. She is unstoppable, she tries any challenge in front of her. Andrielys is always authentic and gives everything her all no matter what. Andrielys, thank you for showing us how a Culler Cougar is consistently ready to learn. Your success is going to change the world.”
 
 
 
Jackson Jensen, son of Alyssa and Dillon Jensen, is a 7th-grade student at Mickle Middle School.
 

Why was this student nominated?

Jackson is a positive role model for his peers. He prioritizes his academics and is kind to all. Jackson is a very respectful student. He excels academically and works well with all peers. He is kind, hardworking, and very responsible.

Civic and volunteer involvement: HOPE Squad.

Awards and recognition: Hardworking Rockstar Award – 7th grade. (6th-grade team award last year.)

Hobbies and outside interests: plays soccer all year around and travels. Enjoys hanging out with friends, video games, and golf.

Other comments: He s a supportive and honest friend.

Luke Thienel, son of William and Melissa Thienel, is an 8th-grade student at Culler Middle School.

Why was this student nominated: School officials said, “Luke is involved in all things related to the arts. Luke is an exceptional leader in the classroom. His understanding of curriculum, ability to convey his thoughts in writing, and positive attitude has made a huge difference for our classroom environment. We are all lucky to have the opportunity to work in the same building as Luke.”

School achievements: He participates in the school jazz band and has been a member in our school musical and variety show the past three years.  Luke has been accepted into the Arts & Humanities focus program.
 
Hobbies and outside interests: Luke is very interested in music and writing. When he finds something he is passionate about, he dives deep into it. For example, he has started creating his own music.  Luke has taught himself how to play the piano and the guitar. He can learn how to play new songs simply by watching videos.

Kira Fiddler, daughter of Jill Fiddler and Lee Fiddler, is a seventh-grade student at Lincoln Lutheran Middle School.
Why was this student nominated? Mr. Novotny nominated Kira because she is a good leader and always does what she’s asked. She sets the bar in strength and conditioning for her other classmates.
Civic and volunteer involvement: Kira volunteers with Meals on Wheels, community service days through school, Warrior Walk mentoring program, and football student manager.
Athletic accomplishments: A dedicated multi-sport athlete, playing volleyball for VCN, basketball for the Lasers, soccer for the Hawks club teams, and school volleyball and basketball A teams. Played on state Lutheran tournament championship team for volleyball.
Religious activities: Church and Sunday school, Vacation Bible School volunteer. Her faith is very important to her and she spreads Jesus’ love everywhere she goes.
Outside achievements: High Honor Roll every semester. Plays trumpet in the band, and trains at 3 Pillars and Kratos.
Hobbies and outside interests: Travel, outdoor sports (snow skiing, boating, paddle boating). Loves musicals, Legos, reading, cooking and baking, babysitting.
Other comments: Kira is a natural leader who demonstrates maturity, loyalty, character and love. She is smart. funny and inclusive.
Reece Baumann, daughter of Blake and Abbey Baumann, is an 8th-grade student aParkview Christian School.
 
Why this student was nominated: School officials said: “Reece is an outstanding student who regularly earns a place on the PCS honor roll. She also excels in activities ranging from art to activities and models an outstanding example of faith, character, and citizenship within our school community. We are so proud to have her at Parkview Christian and look forward to the amazing tapestry of accomplishments that await in her future.”

Adelina Hershberger, daughter of Abigail and Sean Hershberger, is an 8th-grade student at St. Joseph School.

 Why was this student nominated? “Adelina is a hardworking and dedicated student who consistently gives her best effort in both her schoolwork and extracurricular activities. She is a creative student who brings imagination and care to her projects and often expresses that creativity through thoughtful gifts for her teachers and friends. She is respectful and pleasant to her teachers and kind to her peers.”

Civic and Volunteer involvement: Babysitting. Made blankets for the homeless.

Athletic Accomplishments: Golf and swimming.

Religious Activities: Sings in the choir at her church – often chosen for solos. Participates in Catholic summer camp.

Hobbies and outside interests: Dance. Voice Lessons. Crocheting – she crocheted four large blankets in one year. Reading. Junior High Literature. Speech Team.

Manny Radtke, son of Bill and Nicole Radtke, is a seventh-grade student at Pound Middle School.

Teacher’s comment: “Manny is a role model student. He is engaged in the lessons and is helpful to anyone around him. I appreciate Manny’s participation in our class discussions. He always comes to the classroom with a positive attitude and readiness to learn.”

Awards and recognition: Earned three Calvert Elementary Effort Awards.

Civic and volunteer involvement: Manny volunteers with his theatre group in the community called Lincoln Children’s Theatre. He assists in choreography, lighting, back stage assisting, and casting. He is currently volunteering for two musicals this winter. 

Hobbies and outside Interests: Manny enjoys hanging out with his friends, reading, and being creative through many art forms. He loves drawing, painting and pottery. Manny participates in multiple musicals each year with Youth Actors Academy of Lincoln (YAAL) and Lincoln Children’s Theatre (LCT). He has been cast as Scar in “Lion King”;  Wicked Witch in “The Wizard of Oz”; Ursula in ” Little Mermaid”; the Duchess in “Alice by Heart”; Squidward in “Spongebob the Musical”; Damian in “Mean Girls Jr.,” and many supporting character roles in other musicals such as “Aladdin”; “Mary Poppins”; “Jungle Book”; “Addams Family,” and “Shrek the Musical.”

Other comments: Teachers add, “Manny is fun, sarcastic, creative, and responsible. He loves dancing, singing, road trips, laughing with others, and friendly competition. Whether he’s being social or enjoying time at home, Manny brings positivity and humor to those around him.”

Nolan Wortman, son of Anthony Wortman, is a 7th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
 
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Nolan was nominated for his leadership, kindness, and academic success. Nolan is a trustworthy volunteer who leads his peers through his good example. He is hard-working and friendly to everyone.”
 
Civic and volunteer involvement: Nolan is a member of the Student Council.
 
Athletic accomplishments: Nolan plays basketball for the 7th-grade NAM team. He is also involved with a club basketball team and a club baseball team.
 
Religious activities: Nolan attends church often, prays daily, and also serves at Mass.
 
Outside achievements: Nolan has been on the Honor Roll every semester.
 
Hobbies and outside interests: Nolan enjoys fishing, spending time with friends, and riding his bike to different places.
Kaden Tunney, son of Alison & Jim Tunney, is an 8th-grade student at Parkview Christian School.
 
Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “Kaden regularly earns a spot on our High Honor Roll while representing our student body with high character and positive virtues. His teachers celebrate his studious work ethic and positive interactions and engagements with his peers. We are blessed to have a student of Kaden’s character leading our 8th-grade class and want to recognize all that he positively contributes to our school community!”
Nicole Bock, daughter of Jessica and Isaac Bock, is a 7th-grade student at Lincoln Lutheran Middle School.
 
Awards and recognition: Honor roll every semester. First in her soccer league. Known for doing marching band.
 
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Mr. Williams nominated Nicole because she took on the challenge of marching band. Marching band is no easy task, and she has done this with the best attitude possible, and is always working hard to accomplish her goals and the goals of the group.”
 
Civic and volunteer involvement: Involved with Girl Scouts; part of Veterans Day parades; has volunteered at soup kitchens and nursing homes; sings carols at nursing homes; sends cards to the troops.
 
Athletic accomplishments: Has two soccer trophies; currently No. 1 in her division.
 
Religious activities: Goes to Lincoln Lutheran, attends church, and prays daily.
 
Outside achievements: Multiple soccer achievements (first in division, two soccer awards/trophies).
 
Hobbies, outside interests: art, soccer, pottery.
 
Other comments: Involved in her community. Hard worker. Became a big sister in March.

Irene James, daughter of Deepa Jose and James Kathilankal, is an 8th-grade student at Mickle Middle School.

Why Was This Student Nominated?

  • Academic Excellence: Always goes above and beyond when completing work; responsible, motivated, and puts in extra effort.

  • Leadership and Character: A self-advocate with confidence in her skill set; shows a willingness to lead and act as a role model.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Respectful in interactions with adults and peers; described as helpful, kind, and positive.

  • General Disposition: “A wonderful student… always happy and kind.”

Civic and Volunteer Involvement

  • School Community: Extremely willing to help others and always finding ways to assist the people around her.

  • Peer Support: Consistently kind to her peers and helps them with their work or activities.

Outside Achievements

  • Speech and Debate: Participates in intramural speech, drama, and debate organized by LPS.

  • STEM Advocacy: Involved in “Girls Code” (A girls’ club for computer coding).

Taytum Gusso, daughter of Dominic and Shannon Gusso, is a 7th -grade student at Scott Middle School.

Why was this student nominated?
School officials said, “Taytum is an amazing student and human being who consistently demonstrates a positive attitude and great academic effort in class every day. She is a hard worker who is consistently kind, respectful, and responsible, and she is known for being helpful and friendly to others, often assisting those in need. Taytum is bubbly and excited,
always wearing a smile and possesses a great sense of humor that can bring a smile to anyone face. She is always willing to participate, works well with everyone, and is a peer whom others look up to, both inside and outside of school.”

Helps coach youth baseball team.

Athletic accomplishments:
Member of Scott “A Team” for both volleyball and basketball. Top Team member for Supreme Basketball and Team Fury Softball.

Sports, hanging out with friends, watching movies and working out.

Levi Bittle, son of Charley and Shandy Bittle, is a 7th-grade student at Scott Middle School.
 
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Levi is an awesome student who is well-liked by all and is known for his great attitude and smile. He is a kind, respectful, and polite student, always listening attentively and eager to learn. Levi is incredibly responsible and hardworking, consistently giving everything his best effort. He actively participates in all discussions and activities, and always remembers to say ‘please and thank you,’ demonstrating his exceptional manners and willingness to help out.”

Levi is interested in science and animals.  He raises chickens, ducks, geese, quail, pheasants, and dart frogs.
Darlene Tran, daughter of Lynh Tran and Phuong Dien, is an 8th-grade student at Parkview Christian School.
 
Why was this student nominated: School officials said, “Darlene excels both inside and outside the classroom. She is kind, respectful, and helpful to her peers and teachers, and models positive character and work ethic that draws the respect of our entire community. She is on the high honor roll and is  a three-times winner of our school spelling bee. We take great pride in having her represent the Patriots in the Lincoln community.”
Amy Nguyen, daughter of Ngoc Phan and Hieu Nguyen, is a 7th-grade student at Culler Middle School.
 
Why was this student nominated: School officials said, “The most remarkable people in this world are those who are unapologetically themselves. It’s rare to find a gem like Amy who is not only incredibly kind and hard-working, but also so sensationally authentic and unique. Amy finds success by thoroughly embracing all her lovable quirks, caring for others, and always going the extra mile. Culler is a greater place because we get to exist in her sunshine.”
 
Civic and volunteer involvement: Amy is a member of the Hope Squad at Culler, which is a group of students dedicated to helping others, building a sense of community at the school, and spreading positivity.
 
Outside achievements: Amy auditioned for and was accepted into two different LPS district-wide groups: the PANgea Prep Steel Drum Band and the Junior Youth Orchestra. 
Hobbies and outside interests: Amy enjoys all things that have to do with the fine arts including drawing, theatre, and music. She has participated in the school musical for the past two years, is a member of both the Culler band and orchestra, and plays a variety of instruments including cello, bass, percussion, and is teaching herself guitar.
 
Other comments: School officials added, “Amy is a natural leader, often in the band room before or after school, practicing and helping others with their music. She brings other people into the community, welcoming them and encouraging them to try new things such as band, orchestra, and musical. She is eager to learn and is always looking for new ways to challenger herself. Also, Amy is a strong student who makes connections between curricular areas. She is always willing to help others both socially and academically. She is kind-hearted and cares deeply about others.”
Bashar Al-Karawi, son of Zainab Ibrahim & Mahmood Al Kurawi, is a 6th-grade student at Culler Middle School.
 
Why was this student nominated: A school official said, “Over the course of this semester, I’ve had the privilege of watching this week’s nominee grow into the kind and capable young person he is today – showing more confidence, maturity, and compassion with each passing week. A true leader amongst his peers, I have watched him take on his sixth-grade year with both grace and grit.
“From the moment Bashar walks through our doors each morning – on time, prepared, and ready to learn – he sets a positive example for his peers. Bashar’s commitment to his grades, as well as his attendance, reflects not only responsibility, but a genuine enthusiasm for learning and for being part of our Culler community. Bashar’s character is one of the qualities that sets him apart. He approaches each day with kindness, empathy, and a natural desire to help others. 
“As a New Student Ambassador, Bashar plays a vital role in welcoming new classmates into our building. He helps by providing these students with a tour of the building, aids in the logistical side of any first-day-of-school must-do’s, and provides these new students with a warm welcome and friendly face in the lunchroom and hallways. Whether he’s assisting a peer in need or offering support during school activities, Bashar does so with warmth and humility, both of which are qualities that have made a lasting impact on our Culler community. 
“This year, Bashar’s efforts and positive spirit earned him the “Culler Cougar – Unstoppable” award – an honor that truly reflects his perseverance, leadership, and dedication to living our Culler Cougar values each and every day. Outside the classroom, Bashar continues to demonstrate that same drive and determination. He plays on a local competitive basketball team that recently won a tournament. His hobbies reflect a curiosity and appreciation for the world around him – he loves reading, taking walks, exploring nature, gardening, planting, and, of course, basketball. These interests reveal a thoughtful, well-rounded young person who values both learning and personal growth. 
“We are incredibly proud of Bashar’s dedication to academics, his strong moral character, and the positive energy he brings to our halls every day. It is students like Bashar who remind us why our work matters – Bashar is, without a doubt, a young leader in the making, and we are honored to celebrate him.”
 
Elsa Luke, daughter of Jennifer and Jordan Luke, is an 8th-grade student at Culler Middle School.

André Bucknor, son of Andrew M.L. Bucknor and Patricia Bucknor, is a 7 th -grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.

Why this student was nominated: School officials said, “André is conscientious about his school work; he is determined to discover the answers even when clarification is needed. He is polite and respectful to everyone, a hardworking student who always puts his best foot forward on any task in front of him. Andre knows when he needs help and asks for it.” They added, “André is a hard worker and curious. He’s confident and determined. He is also kind to himself and others. He tackles challenges with a smile. He lights up a classroom with his positive energy and is a role model to his classmates. He is a trustworthy friend.”

Nagham Said Mahmoud, daughter of Moueina Alico and Ali Sayed Mahmoud, is a 6th-grade student at Culler Middle School.
Why was this student nominated: School officials said, “Nagham is an exceptional 6th grader who leads with kindness, confidence, and compassion. She is a true friend — always ready to help everyone, and stand up for any friend that might need a little extra help in advocating for themselves. As a natural leader, she encourages her classmates to do their best and speaks up for others — this is especially prevalent when she is advocating for her friends who want to join the band, or pursue another musical opportunity, but do not know where or how to start. Nagham has successfully, and single-handedly, recruited almost a handful of 6th graders (maybe even more) into joining band or orchestra. Nagham’s care and love for music, as well as her warm energy, helps to provide a welcoming environment to any friend that wants to share in the fun and learning that she so deeply values. Her positivity, empathy, and dedication to her peers make her an outstanding role model and a wonderful nominee for this award.”

Nagham has been an active recruiter for our music department. She has been eager to help her friends and fellow Culler Community members learn more about the musical opportunities available to them at school.

Nagham joined the band as a percussionist this year. As a late-join, she worked incredibly hard to catch up to her peers and regularly looks for ways to practice her skills outside of the classroom. Her friendliness, focus, and determination make her an excellent leader in the band. She has found a passion for music and recruits her friends to join band and orchestra as well.
Sophia Contino, daughter of Danae and Alex Contino, is an eighth-grade student at Culler Middle School.

School officials said: “Charlie chooses to be respectful and kind in all that he does. He works hard yet is humble about his abilities. He is determined, motivated, and driven. Charlie is a model student in class. He aims to understand and grow in all things. He does all things with a positive attitude.”
They added: “Charlie excels in school and his extracurriculars; always putting his best foot forward. Charlie is cheerful, always has a smile and nice things to say about others. He is dependable, responsible and respectful of other people’s thoughts and feelings. Charlie is a natural leader to his peers. He is joyful, holy, competitive, and encouraging. Charlie has the ability to see the needs of others and will jump in to assist. He works to explain and support others to grow instead of just doing a task for them.”
Awards and recognition: Charlie has been a recipient of the Christian Courtesy Award. Charlie has met the criteria for the Jets Honor Roll and the Principal’s Honor Roll. 
Athletic accomplishments: He has been a Knights of Columbus Free Throw winner at the state level. He runs with the Catholic Youth League cross country team and is a member of the Supreme Basketball program.

Vy Tran, daughter of Ha Le, is a 7th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Vy was nominated for being an exemplary role model in the classroom and out. She works hard, is kind to others, and is a leader.”

Janessa Schroer, daughter of Travis and Sally Schroer, is a 7th-grade student at Lincoln Christian School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Janessa was noticed by her teachers for her work ethic, kindness, and helpfulness. She is a mix of spunky and straightforward and is appreciated by her classmates as well as the school staff.”
Volunteer, church involvement: Janessa has contributed at Lincoln Berean Church through Vacation Bible School as well as being involved at Camp Sonshine. She and her family have also helped in their community with cemetery cleanup. Janessa helps with a willing heart and a joyful spirit.
Athletic accomplishments: Janessa enjoys volleyball, contributing on both school and club teams.
Achievements, hobbies, interests: Janessa performs at a high level academically and works hard for her good grades. Janessa loves band, animals (previously involved with 4-H), volleyball, and a good book!
Enoch Whitney, son of Michael and Annie Whitney, is a 7th-grade student at Lincoln Christian School.
Why was this student nominated? School officials said, “Enoch was noticed by his teachers for his maturity, kindness, consistency in character, academics, activities, and faith.
Religious activities: Enoch is heavily involved in Sower Church, where he enjoys reaching out to those within the church neighborhood to meet physical and spiritual needs.
Athletic accomplishments: Enoch enjoys football and basketball. This year he was grateful to contribute as the only 7th-grade starter on the 7th/8th-grade football team.
Achievements, hobbies, interests: Enoch is a strong student and cares about earning his Honor Roll grades. His hobbies, along sports, include playing video games with his family.

Civic and volunteer involvement: Ryker does lawn-mowing and snow removal for his neighbors.  He volunteers at church for activities such as the Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat. Ryker also serves as a teller for the school bank.

She is a hard-working student who always puts her best effort into everything she does, no matter the class or the task. She also does it with a smile on her face and a pep in her step.  She is involved in many clubs and activities around Dawes and in the community and goes above and beyond in each of them. Hope makes an effort to be inclusive and kind to all students and truly embodies what it means to be a good citizen, peer and friend.  She is a joy to be around and always brightens your day when you talk to her.”

She leads by example, always doing the right thing without seeking recognition, and is a trustworthy, confident helper who works well with anyone. Reagan is not only an outstanding student but also an even better person, and she is a joy to have in class.”

She’s organized and takes care of her materials and learning in a way that shows how mature she is. She’s kind to students and teachers alike and is a joy to have in class.”
Awards and recognition: Jelena was given the GRIT award for her exceptional dedication to academic excellence. She is on the Honor Roll and a part of the Honors Cadre. She has an optimistic and graceful demeanor which is evident in her interactions with classmates. She confidently seeks clarification when needed and promptly engages in tasks. Beyond being a classroom role model, Jelena is a proactive leader who prioritizes learning goals.
Civic and volunteer engagement: Jelena provides tutoring for younger students. She willingly assumes responsibilities pertaining to her younger siblings, Jenica and Jaedren, as she enjoys helping them. She also assists in packaging and delivering food to those in need.

Dominic Anguiano, son of John and Linda Anguiano, is an 8th-grade student at Pound Middle School.
Why was the student nominated? School officials said: Dominic is a great example of what Pound students should strive to be. His work ethic in the classroom, leadership, and kindness to others is extremely valuable to our school community.” 
Civic and volunteer involvement: Member of Pound Pals for all three years of middle school.
Athletic accomplishments: Dominic plays baseball and ran cross-country at Pound this year. He was recognized as an Academic Archer at the 2025 Nebraska – National Archery in the Schools – Regional Tournament.
Religious activities: Member of the tech team and Vertical Student Ministry worship team at Capital City Christian Church. 
Outside achievements: Last summer Dominic was cast as Teen Terk in the Pinewood Bowl Theater performance of “Tarzan.” He has also participated in Lincoln Community Playhouse performances of “Finding Nemo Jr,” “Charlotte’s Web”, and “The Greatest Christmas Pageant Ever.”

She is a kind, responsible student who is often described as mature, reliable, and dependable. Faith is a curious and introspective student. She is driven in her studies. She is, and always has been, a supportive and caring friend. She is welcoming and funny. She is bright, and so is her smile. She is gentle and kind. Faith exhibits the characteristics of a model student, even when there is a strong temptation to do the contrary.”

Alex Marroquin, son of Lizzette and Nelson Marroquin, is an 8 th -grade student at North American Martyrs School. Why was this student nominated? “Alex is a self-driven, determined student who always approaches each day with positivity and a willingness to help in any way he can.” Civic & volunteer involvement: “Through his activities in Boy Scouts, Alex has helped in various activities, from collecting debris around the neighborhood, to making and delivering packages for people in need. He was also a Student Council member.” Religious activities: “Alex is a Mass server, and always steps up to serve when needed. He likes to learn about God.” Outside achievements: “He is a member of Chess Club and has a passion for competition.” Hobbies: “He likes to ride bikes, enjoys baking, and likes playing games online with his friends and cousins.” Other comments: “Alex always stays busy doing chores around the house and with his homework, and he helps elderly family members when they need an extra hand. One of his greatest pleasures is eating chocolate! Alex is a sharp kid and his family is very proud of him.”
Junior Lopez Tema, son of Josue Lopez Palacios, Hilda Strehle and Andrew Strehle, is an 8th-grade student at Park Middle School.
Why was this student nominated?  Junior is a native Spanish speaker from Guatemala. He has made amazing progress in learning English and works hard to maintain good grades in all his classes. He is friendly and outgoing to teachers and students.
Athletics and activities: At Park, he participates in soccer, basketball, and track. He also plays trumpet in the band. Outside of school, he is involved in his church.
 Max Kumke, son of Todd and Jenny Kumke, is a 7th-grade student at North American Martyrs School.
Awards & Recognition: Student Council, Honor Roll, 3rd place in Science Fair.
Why was this student nominated? Max serves as an excellent example to classmates. He is hard-working, follows directions, participates in class, and frequently volunteers to help.

Thatcher Plugge, son of Amanda and Brian Plugge, is an 8th-grade student at Pound Middle School.

Why was the student nominated?:  Thatcher is an excellent scholar and is kind to his peers. He works very hard to please adults and fellow students. He is always respectful, very humble, and is a joy to have in class.

Civic and Volunteer Involvement:  Thatcher is on the Pound Student Council, serving as vice president.  He enjoys a good leadership opportunity.  Every Thursday he wears a Hawaiian shirt, to match his laid-back attitude and celebration that the weekend is almost here. 

Athletic Accomplishments: Thatcher really enjoys playing tennis, just for FUN!  He has recently picked up pickleball with his brother.

Outside Achievements:  Thatcher plays the double-string bass.  He has been a member of YES and JYO, select orchestras in Lincoln.  He also plays in the Pound Select Jazz Band, earning top scores and placing in state competitions.

Hobbies and Outside Interests:  Thatcher enjoys spending his free time with family and friends.  He enjoys online video games with friends in other states.   Dungeons and Dragons is a favorite, spending hours eating and socializing with his friends.  Since early childhood, Thatcher has enjoyed LEGOS.  He still enjoys building and creating; he has now started to enjoy the art of sorting and organizing his Lego collection.

 Eli Siebert, son of Tina Siebert, is an 8th-grade student at St. Patrick School.
Why was this student nominated? He does a lot of really great things in the classroom and out. He is responsible and takes care of his tasks without reminders. He is willing to put himself out there and try new things. He relates well with his classmates and gets along with everyone. He participates in classes and is a lot of fun to teach.
Awards & Recognition: Achieved honor roll status, received several ROCK award nominations from school for going above and beyond expectations, nominated and attended NHRI Leadership Institute.
Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Volunteers for annual St. Patrick Festival; frequently attends cancer awareness fundraisers.
Athletic Accomplishments: Member of school bowling team and achieved a tie for first place among Lincoln schools; plays flag football.

Yara Nassrat, daughter of Marwa Al-Naimi and Farid Nassrat, is an 8th-grade student at Park Middle School.
Why was this student nominated?  Yara Nassrat is a great role model for her peers at Park Middle School. She shows kindness and respect and she greets all of her friends and teachers with a warm smile. Yara exhibits a growth mindset whenever she encounters challenging problems and she never gives up. Yara is a strong member of the Park community. She is involved with AVID and enjoys the field trips where she can go to elementary schools to mentor younger students. Next year, she is excited to join a high school soccer team. The teachers and staff at Park are proud of who Yara is as a person and the choices she makes in and out of the classroom.
Jessa Hamilton, daughter of Natasha Kraus and Joe Hamilton, is an 8th-grade student at St. Patrick Catholic School.
Why was this student nominated? Jessa was nominated because she is a talented individual with a generous heart. She is a responsible student and a good example of what it looks like to use time wisely. She knows classroom routines well and helps keep them in place. She completes schoolwork efficiently and submits thoughtful, quality work. She is an analytical thinker, and often notices things that others may miss. Jessa enjoys interacting with younger students and often volunteers to help them.

Travion Johnson, son of Victoria and Drew Edmond, is a 7th-grade at Pound Middle School.

Why was this student nominated? Travion is a kind and considerate student. Each day, he demonstrates kindness in his interactions with peers, no matter their social standing. Trey is always willing to lend a helping hand to his classmates and teachers. He completes high-quality work and seeks information/opportunities to learn new things. 

Awards and Recognition – Trey has maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher throughout his middle school years and regularly puts in extra effort to ensure that his grades reflect his hard work and dedication to school. His teachers recognize him frequently for being a standout student. He is also a member of a school group that focuses on new ideas to implement at Pound.

Civic and Volunteer involvement – This past January, Trey was selected to participate in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Rally. He fulfilled the role of reading a write-up about the historic song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” which was sung during the Civil Rights Era in the 1950’s.

Athletic accomplishments – Trey enjoys playing football and basketball, and currently plays AAU basketball through Supreme. He plays flag football through the YMCA, and will soon be starting a spring season of 7v7 football through Lincoln Youth Football. Each day before his practices and/or games, Trey commits himself to a home workout to focus on enhancing his skills in each of these sports. He has developed so much throughout the years, and was a phenomenal leader on the teams he was a part of In 6th grade. He won a knockout contest at Pound and was then selected to participate in a championship knockout contest at a Lincoln Southeast basketball game, competing with other middle schoolers throughout Lincoln..

Hobbies and outside interests – Trey enjoys playing family sports games, drawing, video games, spending time with his younger brothers, and making his household laugh.

 

Other comments – Trey is such a wonderful role model for those around him. He has always stood up for what’s right and encourages others around him to be themselves. His sense of humor and positive attitude keep everyone moving forward and enjoying the ups and downs of life. We are so proud of the young man he’s growing into !

Carter Aksamit, son of Crystal Aksamit, is a 7th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.

Why was this student nominated?  Carter is a mature, responsible student, often showing kindness towards other students. He is a confident learner and asks questions to better understand information. He is cheerful and helpful in the classroom, and he is a valued friend. Carter shows a love of learning outside the classroom.

Awards & Recognition: Carter has been on the JETS Honor Roll, received the Saint John Berchmanns’ Award, and is a past Jetsetter Award winner.

Civic and Volunteer Involvement: Carter volunteered during the YMCA Turkey

is interested in aerospace engineering and aviation. Carter has attended several

 Navy Reisinger, daughter of Jonathan and Alicia Reisinger, is a 6th-grade student at Park Middle School.
Why was this student nominated? Navy Reisinger is an exceptional student and leader. She excels in her academics at Park and puts forth extraordinary effort and quality in her work. Navy is reliable and always willing to give a helping hand. 
Interests and hobbies: She enjoys writing her own stories, reading, and drawing. She was able to showcase her love for the arts by participating in the Park Middle School play titled “The Wind in the Willows”. Outside of school, she participates in a Youth Council group. 
Favorite classes: Navy enjoys several of her classes at Park; Healthy Living and Math are two of her favorites. 
Future: She has dreams of one day becoming a surgeon.

 Atley Janecek, daughter of Joel and Torri Janecek, is an 8th-grade student at Lincoln Lutheran Middle/High School.

Awards: High Honor roll each semester at Lincoln Lutheran.

Why was the student nominated? She is an extremely hard worker, a great classmate, and a genuinely good kid. She never shies away from a challenge and is always willing to work with any of her classmates. She uses her time productively and always sets a good example for others.

Why this student was nominated?:  Ava is thoughtful and attentive to the needs of others, consistently takes responsibility for her work and regularly strives to do her best. She is attentive, bright, cooperative, conscientious on making sure her school work is done well and in a timely manner, and is gentle but with a drive to complete projects put in front of her. Ava is an outstanding student who is selfless and caring. Even in the face of adversity, Ava is level-headed, patient, and kind to all those around her. Ava is a good and genuine friend. She is dedicated to her studies, tries her best always, and her smile lights up a room.

Santino R. Macias, son of Dionray and Teresa Macias, is an 8th-grade student at St. Patrick School.
Why was this student nominated? Santino is a highly-involved student who participates in classes. He asks good questions and is helpful to other students when he understands something well and can share that knowledge. Santino is a curious thinker and often wonders about where things came from or how things may have been. He applies his fascination with the past to the present, often creating good outcomes for himself through hard work and determination. He’s a good friend to others and a positive role model for younger students in the school. Santino is a great classroom citizen.

Nick Baires, son of Lesva Kobryn and Jose Baires, is a 7th-grade student at Park Middle School.
Why was the student nominated? Nick consistently gives his best effort. His work is detailed and it always exceeds expectations. Nick is a student that teachers can depend on when they need someone who is reliable, trustworthy, and kind to others. Nick has a genuine passion for learning that inspires his teachers and his classmates. He is a natural leader in all that he does. Nick’s favorite school subject is math. 
Activities, athletics: He plays the saxophone and was a member of the Park Middle School soccer team as well as the basketball team. He participates in the Educational Talent Search through UNL and he is the president of the Park Green Team. 
Future: Nick has dreams of pursuing a career in the field of computer science.
 

Brielle Castens, daughter of Aaron & Maria Castens, is a 7th-grade student at Lincoln Lutheran Middle/High School.

Civic and volunteer involvement: Helps serve meals to veterans at the Victory Park veterans’ residence; and helps each year  with the Rebecca Miller Memorial Shamrock Showdown hockey tournament for ages 8 and under.
Athletic accomplishments: Member of Lincoln Junior Stars bantam hockey team and the Lincoln Prodigy Legends 13U baseball team. Played for the Police/Sandhills team in the Lincoln Youth Football League.

Brielle Gyhra, daughter of Laurie and Wesley Gyhra, is a 6th-grade student at Saint John the Apostle School.
Why was she nominated? The Middle School Team nominated Brielle because she is dedicated to her studies and asks thoughtful questions. She is a hard worker, helpful in the classroom, very kind to classmates and staff members, usually greets others with a smile, and is very responsible and respectful.

Civic and volunteer Involvement: Helps with church cleaning, and donates toys to the children’s ward at CHI Health Saint Elizabeth Hospital.
Athletic accomplishments: BElevé Dance Company team member, Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company (LMBC) “Nutcracker” production cast member, 1st place in girls’ 400-meter race, 3rd place in girls’ 200-meter race, 1st place in girls’ mile.
